Metal Pipe Fittings Size Guide: How to Read NPS, DN, and Schedule Ratings

An engineer replacing fittings on a 6-inch carbon steel line ordered 6-inch socket weld elbows, but the sockets would not slip over the pipe. The problem was not a manufacturing defect. He had measured the pipe's inside diameter and treated that number as the fitting size, when the 6-inch designation refers to Nominal Pipe Size (NPS). NPS 6 pipe has an actual outside diameter of 6.625 inches, so every fitting in the order was undersized.

Metal pipe fitting sizes are a system of standard designations, not raw physical measurements. Fittings are specified by NPS or DN, while the actual pipe outside diameter, wall thickness, and the fitting's center-to-end dimensions are defined by published ASME standards. Once these relationships are clear, you can order butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, socket weld couplings, and flanges with confidence, and you can verify what arrives at the warehouse.

Understanding Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and DN

NPS is the North American standard designation for the diameter of a pipe. DN (Nominal Diameter) is the metric equivalent used in ISO, DIN, and JIS systems. A pipe called NPS 4 is the same pipe as DN 100. The nominal size is a label, not the measured outside diameter.

Common NPS and DN values with the corresponding actual pipe outside diameters per ASME B36.10M.
NPS DN (mm) Actual Pipe OD (in) Actual Pipe OD (mm)
1/2 15 0.840 21.3
3/4 20 1.050 26.7
1 25 1.315 33.4
1-1/2 40 1.900 48.3
2 50 2.375 60.3
3 80 3.500 88.9
4 100 4.500 114.3
6 150 6.625 168.3
8 200 8.625 219.1
10 250 10.750 273.1
12 300 12.750 323.9
14 350 14.000 355.6

One rule removes most sizing confusion: for NPS 1/2 through NPS 12, the actual outside diameter is larger than the nominal size. From NPS 14 upward, the OD in inches equals the NPS number. This rule drives every butt weld fit-up, because the fitting bore must accept the pipe OD within a tight tolerance.

How Fitting Sizes Are Determined by Connection Type

The sizing logic changes with the connection method. Three families are most common.

Butt weld fittings

Butt weld fitting size follows the pipe outside diameter. A NPS 4 butt weld elbow must accept the 4.500-inch OD of NPS 4 pipe, and the weld end wall thickness must match the pipe schedule. ASME B16.9 covers factory-made wrought butt weld fittings, including dimensions, tolerances, and marking. These are the fittings used in larger lines, high-pressure process piping, and anywhere a full-penetration weld is required. A complete range of butt weld pipe fittings can be manufactured to these dimensional requirements.

Socket weld and threaded fittings

Socket weld and threaded fittings also use NPS as the base, but their dimensions come from ASME B16.11. A socket weld coupling for NPS 1 has a socket bore machined to accept the 1.315-inch OD of NPS 1 pipe with a controlled clearance. Threaded fittings rely on NPT threads with standardized pitch and taper. These forged fittings are common in small-bore lines, instrument connections, and high-pressure hydraulic systems. A complete range of forged fittings is available with either socket weld or threaded ends.

Flanged fittings

Flange size follows the NPS of the pipe, but flanges add a pressure class designation: 150 lb, 300 lb, 600 lb, 900 lb, 1500 lb, or 2500 lb. A Class 150 flange and a Class 600 flange for the same NPS have different outer diameters, bolt circle dimensions, and facing thickness. ASME B16.5 covers flanges from NPS 1/2 to NPS 24; larger sizes fall under ASME B16.47. The flange bore must also match the pipe schedule. For a high-pressure line, weld neck flanges are the preferred choice because the tapered hub transfers stress gradually into the pipe wall.

Wall Thickness, Schedule Numbers, and Their Effect on Fittings

The schedule number defines the wall thickness of the pipe. Schedule 40, 80, 160, and XXS are common designations. For the same NPS, a higher schedule means a thicker wall and a smaller inside diameter.

Wall thickness comparison between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 for selected sizes (values per ASME B36.10M).
NPS Sch 40 (in / mm) Sch 80 (in / mm)
1/2 0.109 / 2.77 0.147 / 3.73
1 0.133 / 3.38 0.179 / 4.55
2 0.154 / 3.91 0.218 / 5.54
4 0.237 / 6.02 0.337 / 8.56
6 0.280 / 7.11 0.432 / 10.97
8 0.322 / 8.18 0.500 / 12.70

Schedule matters for fittings because the weld end thickness of a butt weld fitting must align with the pipe wall. Welding a Sch 80 fitting onto Sch 40 pipe creates a thickness mismatch that concentrates stress at the joint. The same principle applies to flange bores and socket weld bores.

Dimensional Standards You Will Encounter

Every fitting order should reference the standard that governs its dimensions. The most common are listed below.

Primary dimensional standards for metal pipe fittings and flanges.
Standard Scope
ASME B16.9 Factory-made wrought butt weld fittings
ASME B16.11 Forged fittings, socket welding and threaded
ASME B16.5 Pipe flanges and flanged fittings, NPS 1/2 to 24
ASME B16.47 Large diameter steel flanges, NPS 26 to 60
ASME B36.10M / B36.19M Pipe outside diameters and wall thicknesses
MSS SP-43 Wrought stainless steel butt weld fittings

ASME B16.9 is the reference for most carbon and stainless steel butt weld fittings, and the product range at Jiangyin Gaoxin covers this standard in detail. DIN and JIS systems are separate dimensional frameworks; a DIN flange is not interchangeable with an ASME flange, and a JIS B2311 fitting is not equivalent to an ASME B16.9 fitting. The standard, not just the nominal size, must appear on every purchase order.

Critical Dimensions for Common Fitting Types

Beyond the bore and wall thickness, the most frequently checked dimensions are the center-to-end lengths of elbows and the end-to-end lengths of reducers. For a long radius 90-degree butt weld elbow, the center-to-end dimension A equals 1.5 times the nominal diameter; a short radius elbow uses 1.0 times. The 45-degree long radius elbow has its own set of center-to-end values.

ASME B16.9 long radius elbow center-to-end dimensions.
NPS 90-degree A (in / mm) 45-degree B (in / mm)
1/2 1.50 / 38 0.88 / 22
1 1.50 / 38 0.88 / 22
2 3.00 / 76 1.88 / 48
3 4.50 / 114 2.62 / 67
4 6.00 / 152 3.50 / 89
6 9.00 / 229 5.25 / 133
8 12.00 / 305 7.00 / 178

For reducers, ASME B16.9 defines the end-to-end length for each nominal size combination, such as 5.5 inches for a NPS 4 x 3 concentric reducer. For flanges, the critical values are the outer diameter, bolt circle diameter, number and size of bolt holes, and the hub dimensions. Because these values change between pressure classes, ordering a flange requires both NPS and class.

Practical Checks for Specifying and Verifying Sizes

Five checks prevent most sizing errors on the buying side.

  1. Measure the pipe outside diameter with a caliper, not the inside diameter. An OD reading of 6.625 inches identifies NPS 6 pipe.
  2. State the schedule in every order. Write NPS 6 Sch 40 instead of six-inch, because the schedule determines the weld end thickness and the inside bore.
  3. Confirm the dimensional standard. Mixing ASME and DIN components in one flanged joint is a frequent cause of field rework.
  4. Check the material grade against the piping class. A WPL6 low-temperature cap is dimensionally similar to an A234 WPB cap, but the two are not interchangeable in cryogenic service.
  5. Inspect the permanent marking on each fitting. Size, standard, schedule, and material grade must be legible before installation.

Flange geometry deserves extra attention because every pressure class changes the bolt pattern. The practical flange sizing guide walks through the bolt circle and bore checks step by step. For socket weld fittings, the socket bore clearance is only a few thousandths of an inch, so a pipe with an out-of-tolerance OD will not fit the socket.

Metal pipe fitting sizing finally comes down to three identifiers: NPS or DN gives the nominal name, schedule gives the wall thickness, and the ASME standard gives the exact dimensions and tolerances. With those three identifiers on the purchase order, a manufacturer can produce the correct part, an inspector can verify it on receipt, and a buyer can compare quotations across suppliers on an equal basis. When you source ASME B16.9 carbon and stainless steel butt weld pipe fittings from a manufacturer that controls material, dimensions, and testing in-house, the risk of field fit-up problems drops sharply.
